Mohonk Mountain Stage Company is not only an interpreter of other people's work. In collaboration with the Dramatic Writing Program at the State University of New York at New Paltz, MMSC makes possible the Vanguard Voices Project — a unique workshop format for new and emerging playwrights.
How the project works
New scripts are read by professional actors in front of an audience, then discussed. Because the company performs readers theatre rather than fully staged work, the words are always the main event: a playwright can hear what they have written in the mouths of experienced performers, in public, without the cost of a full production.
The project has grown into an annual fixture of MMSC's season. The Vanguard Voices Project: Nurturing New Playwrights presented the 2004 selection of new work developed through the programme, and selections from the project are published in MMSC's literary journal.
