Theatre Scholarship
Since June 1997 MMSC has presented a scholarship award to a graduating High School student who has demonstrated a past enthusiasm for theater and who intends to study Theatre Arts in college. Recognizing the hard work and dedication of those students who love and excel in Theatre Arts is another way in which MMSC can encourage the future of our playwrights, actors, directors, designers and even future audience members.
In
an essay entitled "The Creators" in The New York Times
Magazine, Brian Ferren notes, "Art, storytelling and humor
are wonderful things. Early into the new millennium (say, 250 years),
these will be among the only surviving vocations left from those
we know today...You see, what's so special about us is that we make
art. In a future when intelligent machines and invented life forms
will reason and do our donkey work, human artists will become the
most valued and irreplaceable of professsionals. They will remain
unique in an automated world."
We believe that recognition for achievement in the arts often takes a back seat to other achievements, especially at the High School level. The Mohonk Mountain Stage Company Theatre Scholarship encourages those young people who are willing to take the risk of an arts-oriented life.
The scholarship is the result of the support throughout the year by many of MMSC's loyal patrons and through the sale of Nan's Fancy Jams at our performance venues.
