Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley

MMSC's semi-annual literary journal, published twice a year and devoted to writing from New York's Hudson Valley.

A natural outgrowth of MMSC's celebration of the written word is our publication of Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley. We publish two editions of the journal annually.

What the journal publishes

  • New plays from the Dramatic Writing Program at SUNY New Paltz, developed through the Vanguard Voices Project.
  • Highlights from the annual poetry competition — the prize-winning entries and selected other submissions.
  • Selected other writing from the Hudson Valley and beyond.

Prize-winning poems are not only published: they are read in public by MMSC's Readers Theatre Group, so the writing reaches an audience in the room as well as on the page.

The annual poetry competition

The first annual Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley poetry contest drew over two hundred submissions. First Place ($150) was awarded to Nancy Baker Rullo of Mt. Tremper, New York. Second and Third Place ($50 each) went to Will Nixon of Woodstock, New York and Leo Vanderpot of Red Hook, New York, and ten Honourable Mentions were also selected.

  • Deadline 1 September
  • Entry a $15 reading fee for up to three poems (14 pages total)
  • Prizes First Place $150; Second and Third Place $50 each; Honourable Mentions without cash prize
