Highlights from the Annual Poetry Competition

POETRY CONTEST
WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

We are very pleased to announce the winners of the first annual Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley Poetry Contest. With over two hundred submissions, the First Place ($150) was awarded to Nancy Baker Rullo of Mt. Tremper, NY. Second and Third Place ($50 each) were awarded, respectively, to Mr. Will Nixon of Woodstock, NY and Mr. Leo Vanderpot of Red Hook, NY. In addition, ten Honorable Mentions were selected.
All prize-winning poems, as well as selected other entries, will be published in MMSC's Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley - Poetry 2004, and will be read in a public performance, New York Writing, on Saturday, December 4, by the MMSC's Readers Theatre Group.

  • In affirming MMSC's decision to begin publishing as an integral part of is programs, MMSC's Producing Director, Robert Miller, noted " As a company dedicated to celebrating the written word, MMSC recognizes its responsibility not only to revel in the work of gifted authors past and present, but to contribute to the development of a body of literature yet to be written." MMSC's Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley, a semi-annual literary journal, focuses on the development of new plays and a regional poetry competition.

 

  • Mohonk Mountain Stage Company's first annual Poetry Contest for poems to be included in Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley (Volume 1, Issue 2) was open to all writers living in the Hudson Valley of New York, from Albany to the metro-New York City area. The contest deadline was September 1, 2004, and included cash prizes for First Place ($150) Second and Third Place ($50 each) entries, as well as Honorable Mention award (no cash prize). All prize-winning entries, as well as selected other entries, will be published in MMSC's Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley - Poetry 2004 , published in the fall, and will be read in a public performance by the MMSC's Readers Theatre Group.   There was a reading fee of $15 for up to three poems (14 pages total); the official submission guidelines are available here: www.mmstageco.com/publications/images/Guidelines - PM.pdf .

 

  • The poetry entries were be reviewed by a panel of preliminary readers, Mr. William Connors, Mr. Don Wildy and Dr. Stella Deen. Final judging was by Barbara Adams.   Ms. Adams is a distinguished Hudson Valley poet herself, who resides in Newburgh, NY.   She has published two volumes of poetry, as well as numerous poems, essays and short stories in several literary magazines. A member of Poets & Writers and PEN, Ms. Adams has led poetry workshops in Cape Cod and at Pace University Hudson Valley Center.   She was a professor of English at Pace University in New York City from 1982 - 2000.
